The Alignment, Konst Kvarnstugan (Winner - Invited Municipal Competition)

The Alignment is a site-specific sculptural installation for Kvarnstugan, located at Ursvik Square in Stockholm.

Positioned at the entrance of Torghuset, the work consists of a sequence of monumental bronze hands that unfold along the façade and extend into the building’s interior. The gestures form a rhythmic, chain-like composition—at once floral and symbolic—suggesting connection, continuity, and encounter. While the exterior elements climb upward along the architecture, a corresponding set of hands reappears inside at body height, creating an intimate spatial dialogue.

Drawing on references such as the Blue Gate at Royal Djurgården, the work translates historical ornamental forms into a contemporary sculptural language. The hands’ rounded shapes and near-touching gestures evoke organic growth and mathematically ordered structures, reflecting ideas of alignment, equality, and cohesion.

Executed in bronze with contrasting patinas—verdigris on the exterior and a rare blue finish inside—the installation bridges historical and contemporary expressions of the material. In dialogue with the surrounding architecture, The Alignment establishes a dynamic and welcoming threshold, inviting movement, interaction, and collective presence.

The Alignment ist eine ortsspezifische skulpturale Installation für Kvarnstugan am Ursvik Torg in Stockholm.

Am Eingang des Torghuset positioniert, besteht die Arbeit aus einer Abfolge monumentaler Bronzehände, die sich entlang der Fassade entfalten und bis in das Innere des Gebäudes hineinreichen. Die Gesten bilden eine rhythmische, kettenartige Komposition – zugleich floral und symbolisch – und verweisen auf Verbindung, Kontinuität und Begegnung.

Unter Bezugnahme auf Vorbilder wie das Blaue Tor im Königlichen Djurgården übersetzt die Arbeit historische ornamentale Formen in eine zeitgenössische skulpturale Sprache. Die gerundeten Formen der Hände und ihre beinahe berührenden Gesten evozieren organisches Wachstum ebenso wie mathematisch geordnete Strukturen und spiegeln Vorstellungen von Ausrichtung, Gleichheit und Zusammenhalt wider.

In Bronze mit grüner Patina ausgeführt, verbindet die Installation historische und zeitgenössische Ausdrucksformen des Materials. Im Dialog mit der umgebenden Architektur schafft The Alignment eine dynamische und einladende Schwelle, die zu Bewegung, Interaktion und kollektiver Präsenz einlädt.
